St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Charlottetown may be one of the best examples of the ways Harris’ architecture marries elegant aesthetic form with exceptional acoustic functionality. Built in 1896 of Island sandstone, the church’s features are well described in a reporting of the dedication of the building by the Charlottetown Examiner on March 14th, 1896:

“The wooden groined roof covering the chancel and nave, besides being beautiful, is acoustically very valuable, as abrupt square surfaces at right angles throughout the building are avoided, and the octagon shape of the end of the sanctuary, with its roof curving outwards toward the nave, has the effect of reflecting the millions of sound waves directly into the body of the church.”

Perhaps the most unique characteristic is the resonant chamber below the chancel floor supported by a single piece of juniper wood that acts like a violin’s sound post to amplify the sound from above.
