Early churches built in 4th century Rome incorporated triumphal arches and Harris always used this feature in his church designs. The “arch” in this composition starts in All Soul’s Chapel, Charlottetown, with one bell chiming meditatively the arch theme. This one bell grows to five bells ringing, incense in the air and a High Anglican Easter service. There is a reverential nature to this opening section drawing inspiration from the work of Palestrina, Lotti and Byrd. We leave St. Peter’s Cathedral to go to St. John’s Anglican Church in Crapaud for the second section. A wedding celebration is in progress. Fiddle tunes and wedding bells vie for the last say. Again we hear the opening arch theme before a big flourish and a high note held by the first violin connecting to the third section inspired by the beauty and grandeur of St. Mary’s at Indian River. While the 1st violin part gradually descends, the viola and 2nd violin maintain sixteenth note arches. The cello and bass take on Harris’ imagined character as he walks around the newly completed church in 1902. The fourth and final section of the piece takes us back to All Soul’s Chapel and the ecclesiastical feel of the opening. The work concludes with a musical acknowledgement of William Critchlow Harris’ life, his work and his passing July 16, 1913.
