about

In May 1884, the residents of the houses surrounding Rochford Square in Charlottetown, including the Harris family, gathered to plant one hundred and ten trees on the first ever Arbour Day on PEI.

I wrote this piece while imagining the people coming out to enjoy the day, which perhaps was complete with a band performing and refreshments available. In between planting the trees and enjoying the sunny weather, a few couples started dancing a waltz. William was notoriously a bit shy, so perhaps didn’t feel comfortable dancing, remaining by himself off to the one side. Eventually, though, he is pulled back into the party by the neighbourhood children, rejoining the celebratory atmosphere.
